The Save the Children Organization was founded in Great Britain in 1919 by Eglantyne Jebb and her sister Dorothy Buxton to provide relief to starving children in Germany and Austria-Hungary. Today the Save the Children Organization is operational worldwide. The Organization’s scope has expanded from providing relief to starving children to offering early childhood learning, literacy and math programs for underprivileged children from birth through the 3rd grade.
One of the goals of the Save the Children Organization is for these children to read at grade level by 3rd grade. The Organization has been in Arkansas for several years operating Head Start programs across the state and working with school districts to offer educational programs during and after school, and summer programs as well. We were pleased to have their US President, Mark Shriver, visit the Capitol along with Board of Trustee member and actress, Jennifer Garner. The pair, along with Amanda Smithson, spent the day in Arkansas beginning in Eastern Arkansas and making their way to the Capitol before heading on to Bentonville. Legislative Leadership, the Governor and First Lady as well as several state agency directors got to visit with Jennifer and Mark to discuss the programs offered by Save the Children.
We look forward to continuing to work with this Organization to provide early learning opportunities for children in our state.
